The AHEC program was developed by Congress in 1971 to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committed to underserved populations. The North Carolina program began in 1972 and was the first AHEC Program in the country. The agencies that comprise the North Carolina AHEC system strive to meet or exceed the standards of healthcare licensing and certification boards throughout the state. Through attention to quality education the AHECs are approved to provide a wide variety of credits including, but not limited to: CME, CHES, CNE, and NC Psychologist (Category A).
